I am not sure Columbus deserves a holiday...my ancestors did not appreciate his "discovering" their land. His arrival signified the beginning of the end for at least three major civilizations and tragedy for untold millions.
Italians have made significant contributions to science and literature. Pliny the Elder, left, was a naturalist and compiled the first science compendium. He lost his life during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 C.E. as he was observing (and writing about) the volcano and attempting to help the survivors of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
So in honor of Italian-Americans, and especially their scientists and writers, I declare Monday PLINY the ELDER Day.
Have a great weekend.
